About me

Wolfgang Maiwald is a professional, contemporary jazz pianist and keyboard player with an original sound, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His compositions distinguish themselves by catchy, narrative melodies, compelling grooves and lyrical improvisations. Wolfgang plays concerts and shows in the Netherlands and abroad. He composes, arranges and produces music for his own projects as well as for various artists. Wolfgang teaches jazz piano at the DJAM, the School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Amsterdam and for private students. He also works as an audio recording engineer and videographer and editor in his own audio/video reocrding studio.

Wolfgang was born and raised in Germany and began playing the piano at the age of 14 as an autodidact. Starting with a local band, he wrote songs and lyrics and soon became interested in jazz. In 1998 he won first price at the “Jugend Jazzt Niedersachen” jazz contest for both best soloist and band leader.

In 1990 Wolfgang moved to Holland to study jazz piano at the Hilversum Conservatory, the jazz department of the AHK Amsterdam School of Arts, where he graduated "Cum Laude" in 1995. He settled in Amsterdam and developed into an exceptionally sophisticated and subtle musician.

In 2010 Wolfgang debuted with his first album under his own name, entitled “Two Faces” with his trio, the Wolfgang Maiwald Trio. The album deservedly garnered wide critical acclaim. In 2013 Maiwald succesfully showcased with the Wolfgang Maiwald Trio at the “Dutch Jazz Day” and won the “Dutch Jazz Competition” semi-finals, performing with his trio in 2014. In 2014 Maiwald released his second trio album, entitled "The Silent Ones", followed by an extensive album relaese tour through the Neterlands. Both albums are distributed in The Netherlands and in Japan.

From 2015 to 2018 he extensively played concerts and festivals with the funk-fusion group TRUNK., a band he formed together with saxophonist Iman Spaargaren.

Wolfgang has been playing performances and concerts in different styles and formations, sharing the stage with famous Dutch and international musicians like Ellen ten Damme, Rick Margitza, Joe Lovano, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Bart van Lier, Ben van den Dungen, Deborah Carter, Tineke Postma and others. He performed theater concerts for children with Dutch actor/singer Eric Beeks in different shows for more thaan 25 years and lately workes together with singer/songwriter Jordy van Loon.
